“Karim Philippe Saad was born in Beirut, Lebanon and he is now been living in Dubai, United Arab Emirates since 2007. Karim is holder of a bachelor degree in Communication Arts from the renowned Saint Joseph University in Beirut. He then went to Paris to undergo many specialized studies in 16mm film editing, sound & image. He made his debut in Lebanon in the TV production industry where he was mainly responsible for the production of TV shows, commercials & promotional films. His love for strong visuals helped him go further in his career and in 2013, Karim started exploring virtual reality filmmaking, which was a turning point in his professional life. In 2014 Karim established Giga Works in Dubai, his virtual reality (VR) film studio, offering 360º content capture and storytelling, VR experience, and customized GigaBox cardboards. Karim created and produced the first VR experience for marketing use in the Middle East for Rainbow Milk. He produced the local and international award winning VR experience for “Wild Wadi Water Park” – Jumeirah Group. Karim’s work also involved production of short documentaries and VR experiences for DP World, DEWA, General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs, Strata, Etihad Rail and Dubai Design District; as well as user experiences for Mercedes Benz Middle East, Dodge North America, Columbia and Ski Dubai. I have a long and distinguished career in the media industry, spanning for more than three decades.
I was actively involved in many ambitious projects, including the launch of the BBC Arabic TV in 1994, and Al Arabiya TV channel in 2003, in addition to the evaluation of the Palestinian TV output at the request of the EU in 2012. I was also involved in numerous workshops, seminars, conferences, as media expert and senior trainer, organised by Euromed, IREX, AFP Foundation, Thompson Foundation, BBC Media Action, etc. Being an internationally recognized media expert, I was part of several consulting teams dispatched in various developing countries by several media institutions such as BBC Media Action, Thompson Foundation, AFP Foundation, IREX, UNDP, etc. The aim was to help improve the professional standard of local journalists and instil a new media culture based on freedom of speech, accuracy and impartiality.
During my long professional career, I gained a great deal of valuable field knowledge and experience in the countries where I operated including Morocco, Mauritania, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan, Syria, Iraq, Kuwait, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, etc. In my capacity as Director of Assignment, in charge of more than twenty bureaus and over forty correspondents, I used to run an internal project aimed at training young journalists from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Iraq, Bahrain, UAE, etc. Last but not least, I led a media team that promoted media freedom in Morocco in conjunction with the CMF (Centre for Media Freedom). After five years of continuous field action, our efforts were rewarded with the introduction of article 27 on ‘the right to access information’, in the constitution adopted in the 2011 referendum.
