About
Born in the Everest region of Nepal, Ngima Gelu Sherpa is an independent filmmaker based in Kathmandu. His debut documentary short film, Home, premiered at Internationale Kurzfilmtage Oberhausen in 2021 and was awarded the Prize of Ecumenical Jury – Honorable Mention. His sophomore documentary short, Kathmandu Monsoon, premiered at DMZ Docs 2022, and it was also in competition at the New Orleans Film Festival. Previously, he also made two short fiction films: Adaptação (2020) won Audience award in Greece, and Phulsiri (2016) was awarded Best children film in Nepal. Sherpa holds MA in fiction film direction from Kino Eyes: The European Movie Masters program (2018 – 2020) involving stints in Lisbon, Edinburgh, and Tallinn, for which he received a full Erasmus plus scholarship. Prior to that, he completed Bachelor in Media Studies at Kathmandu University. He is also alumni of Rotterdam lab and Berlinale talents.

A young Nepali man, preparing to launch a filmmaking career in Europe, is suddenly summoned home in the Everest region. His father, a livestock farmer like most Sherpas before they became known for mountaineering, is ailing. In this intimate portrait, the filmmaker explores his relationship to home and his parents, and the world of tradition and ritual he thought he had left behind.

Trembling Mountain
The film follows the residents of Langtang village in upper Rasuwa district, Nepal, following their evacuation to Kathmandu in the aftermath of the April 2015 earthquake. Most residents are taken to a large Gelug monastery where they are slowly provided with basic shelter, limited food and negligible health care. The film maker interviews individuals suffering from the trauma with no psychological support and barely able to cope with the heat and low altitude. He follows the local cheesemaker when a group returns to their villages weeks later searching for bodies and livestock.
