The disappearance of Amarildo de Souza in the world famous favela da Rocinha shed light over Rio de Janeiro's impressive rate of missing people: more than 6.000 per year. A considerable part of these disappearances, just like in the case of Amarildo, covers murders executed by by police, traffickers and militia members. This investigative report aimed to unveil this once overlooked situation.
The "pacification" of the favelas in Rio de Janeiro led to the police's greater control of the community routine. Authorities, for example, have to authorise parties. In this atmosphere, the traditional "baile funk", which is considered to be related to crime by some police officers, lost ground to parties promoted by middle class causing favelas inhabitants to question the situation.
After "pacification", the favelas in Rio become place of a new reality where entrepreneurship flourishes, people from higher classes are attracted to parties and poor inhabitants are obligated to move due to the real estate boom.
