About
Marcio Isensee e Sá is a brazilian photographer and videomaker. Among his work are the films: "Andes Agua Amazônia" (2012), "Um Rio em Disputa" (2015) and, most recently, "Grazing the Amazon" (2018). He has won the Losofonia Price in 2015 from the CineEco Seia, in Portugal, the Petrobrás Price for Journalism in 2017 (Brazil) and One Hour Award, Special from FReDD Festival in 2018 (France). His work focused mostly in the coverage of environmental issues in Brazil, where he contributes to relevant publications such as ((o))eco, Repórter Brasil, Agência Pública and Arte 1. Marcio has graduated in Social Science at the Fluminense Federal University (UFF), in Rio de Janeiro.

Grazing The Amazon
Grazing the Amazon There are 85 million cows in the Brazilian Amazon, which means three cows for each human dweller grazing today and area that was once forest. Less than fifty years ago, in the 1970s, the rainforest was intact. Since then, a portion the size of France has disappeared, 66% of which transformed into pastures. Much of this change is a consequence of government incentives that attracted thousands of farmers from southern lands. Cattle ranching became an economic and cultural banner of the Amazon, forging powerful politicians to defend it. In 2009, there was a game changer: the Public Prosecutor's Office sued large slaughterhouses, forcing them to supervise cattle supplying farms.
