Brittainy Newman is a freelance visual journalist based in New York City. A 2018 graduate of the Rochester Institute of Technology’s Photojournalism program, she joined The New York Times as a year-long photography newsroom fellow in 2019. She now works for The New York Times and The Associated Press as a frequent contributor. Her work takes the familiar and turns it on its head, by viewing the world from a strange, but illuminating new angle. Common themes in her work are the exploration of loss and sacrifice, as they play out in the sphere of family, politics and labor.  To date, Brittainy has had ten (10) front page covers above the fold for The New York Times. In 2021, The Associated Press selected two of Brittainy’s images to be included in “A Year That Changed Us: 12 Months in 150 Photos” — a special issue that relives the most significant moments through extraordinary photographs captured by photographers of The Associated Press. She also had two images featured in The New York Times “Year in Pictures” for the year 2020, a portrait of President Joseph R. Biden and a self portrait documenting her quarantine during lockdown. And in 2019, The New York Times selected her image of a couple kissing at Pride for the “Year in Pictures.” In 2018, she placed gold in the Individual Multimedia category at the 73rd College Photographer of the Year competition, and achieved an Award of Excellence in the Portrait category.
