Jason Greene is an award-winning cinematographer and filmmaker interested in social issues and the collaborative nature of filmmaking. He was most recently a Director of Photography and Editor at Blue Chalk, where he contributed to projects that earned recognition from the Northwest Regional Emmys, the AIB, Communicator, Telly, W3 and Webby Awards, among others. He is currently based in Portland, Oregon as an Independent cinematographer.

In this film, fifth generation oysterman Rickey Banks who wonders whether his son will be able to continue the tradition to a sixth generation. In 2012, Apalachicola Bay saw its oyster harvest diminish 88%. The reasons are multifaceted, but high salinity caused by an unusual regional drought and sea level rise are primarily to blame. Both factors are likely linked to climate change.
This films tells the story of the CARE International’s success in improving the maternal health of women and babies in Bihar, one of India’s poorest states. The goal was to produce two visually stunning films that would illustrate key elements of the innovative program while suggesting to future funders and public health leaders that the solutions pioneered in Bihar are reproducible in other regions of India and the developing world. This film captures the work of the government departments, nurses, front line health workers and medical officers who have come together to redefine maternal health outcomes for thousands of mothers and babies throughout the state.

The Navajo Nation has been hit hard by the pandemic. Access to information during this frightening time “is a matter of life or death,” says Tom Arviso Jr., long-time publisher of the Navajo Times. This film, produced in partnership with the Pulitzer Center, embeds with this newsroom and the handful of reporters who cover their community. It’s a demanding task, as the 150,000 people of the Navajo Nation live spread over three states crisscrossed by 18,000 miles of mostly unpaved roads. Cell service is unreliable and 40% have no internet access. For many on the reservation, the arrival of the weekly newspaper, often days after it is published, is their only way to keep up with life on their land. Established in 1959, the Navajo Times was the first Native newspaper to get its independence from its tribal government and has a long-standing reputation of acting as a watchdog for its community. Perhaps more than any other newspaper, its dwindling circulation could leave many with very little knowledge of what occurs on their land. By embedding with Navajo journalists, we tell the stories of people who maintain the crucial, but fragile, informational links that hold together a culturally strong community spread over an enormous space with limited digital connectedness.
