Danny Copeland is a freelance, self-shooting Producer-Director and multi-media specialist focused on creating impactful films and creating strategic digital content that revolves around science and the natural world - particularly our oceans. Danny has been working at the intersection of conservation, underwater media, and documentary for the last 10 years. For several years he worked at the Manta Trust - a non-profit focused on the conservation of manta rays, where he produced, shot and edited multimedia campaigns and content to help fundraise and deliver policy wins. As a freelancer, he regularly works with other marine conservation and research institutions, including the Blue Marine Foundation, to capture evergreen media assets for use across their slate of projects. In the mainstream media world, Danny worked as a Field Producer and timelapse camera operator on the Netflix feature documentary, Chasing Coral. Between 2019 - 2023, he spent 3 years working as an Assistant Producer-Director at the BBC Natural History Unit, including on the Coast and Oceans episodes of an Attenborough-led blue chip natural history series called Prehistoric Planet. He has worked alongside world-leading shark scientists, assisted National Geographic photographers on assignment, and spent a year sponsored as the European Rolex Scholar in 2015. Currently Danny focuses on juggling commercial and client work related to the underwater world and social justice / issues, alongside spearheading his own passion projects - all with the ultimate goal of utilising multi-media and storytelling to drive tangible conservation action for the benefit of our oceans and wider planet. A video guide for snorkelers and divers around the world, to explain how to responsibly interact with manta rays during an encounter, whilst minimising their impact on these gentle giants. This was pitched to and commissioned by the Manta Trust as part of a wider "How to Swim with Manta Rays" initiative. The film itself was made in partnership with Swiss watch brand, Carl F. Bucherer.
This 360VR film project formed the centre-piece of a media campaign launched by the Manta Trust, a marine conservation NGO that co-ordinates global efforts to research and conserve mobulid rays. This film took viewers onto a VR scuba dive with mobula rays, and was played to governmental delegates at a global conference before they voted on whether mobulas should receive increased trade protection.

A short-doc conceptualized, shot and edited within 5 days, as part of the 2018 Media Labs at the International Wildlife Film Festival. This film went on to premiere on National Geographic's Short Film Showcase, and supported the news and press release of the associated research included in the film.

This VR film follows Ana Sobral, one of few marine biologists to study mobula rays - a family of charismatic, highly intelligent and elusive fish. Little is known about mobulas, so Ana studies the rays that visit Santa Maria in the Azores, one of the only places in the world where humans can regularly encounter them underwater. By better understanding them, she hopes to aid in their conservation.
