Every day, as many as 30,000 people cross the border from an economically devastated Venezuela to Colombia. We follow David, a Venezuelan with Colombian citizenship, as he makes the daily journey across the border from Venezuela to Colombia where he attends university. The 2016 peace deal brought hope to many Colombian communities that had been exposed to brutality for decades. Three years on, this hope is being extinguished by a wave of attacks and murders on political candidates and community leaders – many of them women. Teresa and Maria* are seeking asylum in the United States. More than that, they are seeking safety from gang violence and a reprieve from discrimination for simply being a lesbian couple. They want stability and a safe home. Venezuela continues to struggle under the disputed rule of President Nicolas Maduro as hyperinflation, blackouts, and food shortages plague the country. In response, some have chosen to leave the country — often on foot — to find a better life in neighboring Colombia. This is a story of roughly 15 students from Hong Kong International School traveling to Ambur, India to teach empowerment classes to peers their own age in Ambur.

About Cady
I have experience producing documentary films, writing feature articles, and packaging radio & TV pieces. I'm an American based in Bogotá, Colombia, with experience working in English, Spanish and French. In 2015, following dreams of being a full-time storyteller, I moved to India to co-direct a documentary about an orphanage outside the city of Hyderabad. Most recently, I served as the managing editor at Innovations | Stories, an online publication sharing the stories of social innovators all over the Global South. While at Innovations | Stories I designed and spearheaded a multimedia editorial strategy which allowed for more diverse content (a heavier focus on photo and video stories). As managing editor I supported video and photo freelance contributors from all over the world and designed storytelling trainings for social innovators to tell their own stories. I'm originally from Berkeley, California, USA and I earned my B.S. from the University of California, Davis in Community and Regional Development with a minor in Art Studio (focusing on video and photography). From 2010-2015 I directed a global education program called One World Youth Project (OWYP), based in Washington, DC. At OWYP I designed middle school (age 10-14) curriculum and trained university students to teach it around the world in their own communities. The program taught the children cross-cultural communication by empowering them to create and send video, photo, and written messages to their partner classroom abroad - all facilitated by trained university student volunteers. While serving as program director at OWYP I had the privilege of traveling around the world visiting schools and delivering trainings at universities. My work in education and the opportunity to see so much of the world made me realize I wanted to tell stories. Storytelling is the best form of education anyway.
