I’m a Costa Rican investigative journalist with vast experience in cross-border collaborative projects with newsrooms in Latin America and the US. Until recently, I collaborated with the Centro Latinoamericano de Investigación Periodística (CLIP). Before that I worked as Data and Investigations editor for Univision Noticias in Miami. I was a fellow in the 2019 class of the John S. Knight fellowship at Stanford University, where I explored ideas to create a collaborative network of journalists to do more investigative reporting on immigration issues. Currently I'm an adjunct professor at CUNY's Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism. My work has been recognized with numerous awards, including a national Emmy for outstanding feature story in Spanish, the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award, the 2017 Ortega y Gasset Journalism Award from the Spanish daily El País, the 2015 Global Shining Light Award, after a five-month cross-border collaborative investigation on cigarette smuggling in South America.
