I recently directed There Goes Our Neighbourhood, a documentary commissioned by ABC with finance from Screen Australia, Create NSW and Pozible crowdfunding. The film captured a community light sculpture project and social action campaign developed by the residents of Sydney's largest public housing estate at Waterloo. The project reached over half a million people, and put a human face to the public housing debate, as questions arise about the redevelopment of inner city estates in Australia and globally. Currently I am producing a theatrical documentary feature about Wanita, 'Australia's Queen of Honkytonk', a chaotic, talented country music singer who after 47 years of imagining and hoping, is taking one last glorious stab at stardom in the USA. An entirely unpredictable story about the chaos of human 'dreams' and Wanita's unique journey to leave her mark. As a producer and director I empower the subjects I collaborate with, focusing on artists, communities and social change. I have the advantage of having worked extensively with the arts sector, which has made me a unique storyteller. I am able to identify meaningful narratives that connect with audiences while also balancing the intentions of a project, with the logistics. I have directing, producing, project management, curating and writing experience. After training in Documentary at AFTRS, I have worked in various roles as a creative producer, director and researcher for television, digital agencies and independent films. The Palace Hotel is a curious beast. After ambling past the wonderfully-named Oxide, Chloride and Bromide Streets, you reach this infamous mining town’s diamond in the rough. Like a beached ocean liner, she stands on the corner of the main drag, implausibly grand and inexplicably big. This film treats the Palace like a gossipy old dame: collecting stories from across generations.
When politicians and property developers threaten to take over Waterloo, Sydney and force public housing battlers to the edges of the city, the locals fight back: their war cry an ambitious artwork, the making of which will both unite and divide. ABC Arts, screened 20 November 2018
