Faizan Ali is Daytime Emmy nominated cinematographer and documentary filmmaker based in Karachi, Pakistan. Faizan firmly believes in close relationship between the intimacy that comes with human emotions and Cinema. His filming style combines observational cinema with poetic elements which encourages the viewer to see the world from a different perspective, paving a way for social discourse. After completing his bachelors in Film and Television (2014) he worked as a director of Photography under the mentorship of two-time Academy Award-winner Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy (2015-2019). Over the course of four years Faizan has explored the influence and utility of documentaries in giving back to the society which has motivated him to explore multiple mediums of visual story telling. Faizan holds a Masters Degree in Documentary Filmmaking under the program called DocNomads (2019-2021), which is a part of Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters Degree. During this program he has produced and directed various short creative documentary films across Europe including Portugal, Hungary and Belgium. In 2017 he worked on five Virtual Reality short documentaries across Pakistan which highlighted the stories of unspoken heroes working for the betterment of the society. He has worked as a Director of Photography for Pakistan’s first YouTube original series in collaboration with Global Fund for Women, titled ‘Fundamental. Gender Justice. No Exceptions’ (2020). The series highlights the efforts of the female community leaders standing up for basic human rights around the world. This series recently got nominated for ‘Outstanding short form daytime non-fiction program’ and ‘Outstanding directing team for single camera daytime non-fiction program’ in the 48th Annual Daytime EMMY Awards 2021. He is also the Director of Photography for Pakistan’s first short animation film for Netflix titled ‘Sitara: Let Girls Dream’ (2020).
