Meet the 30-member group called Dharavi Rocks. They turn trash into musical instruments to produce music. The band members range from age 14 to 24 years old, and all live in Asia's second largest slum - Dharavi, Maharashtra. TicToc meets the band members and Vinod Shetty, the man who helped to make it all happen. He is a human rights and labor laws advocate who started an NGO called ACORN Foundation that initiated the Dharavi Project.
n many parts of India, baby boys are favored over girls, who—due to the dowry system—can be seen as a financial burden on families. But the people of Piplantri are fighting this prejudice. In Piplantri, villagers celebrate the birth of their girls by planting 111 trees for each infant. The ritual began after Shyam Sunder Paliwal lost his teenage daughter, Kiran, and planted a tree in her honor. Today, he is leading the charge to ensure the girls of Piplantri are protected from harm and educated so they can grow up to be independent and self-sufficient. The trees are now becoming a source of beauty, sustenance and growth for the girls and the village as a whole.
Mallakhamb is an ancient Indian sport that combines yoga poses with the athleticism of gymnastics—all performed while perched atop a vertical wooden pole. Uday Deshpande teaches Mallakhamb in Mumbai’s Shivaji Park.
