This was was the first in-depth look at the repercussions of the FBI's "Black Identity Extremist" designation. I obtained court documents showing that Rakem Balogun was under surveillance and eventually arrested because of the "Black Identity Extremist" intelligence assessment. I spoke to former FBI agents, civil liberties lawyers and anti-police violence activists.
I witnessed the murder of a taxi driver in the tourist area of Acapulco while on a reporting trip in Mexico. I spoke to local taxi drivers about their relationships with warring cartels and international observers about the US's drug war's impact on real on people in tough situations, such as the taxi drivers. I also researched local law enforcement and politicians' ties to the cartels.
