Malnourished Children in Guatemala
In June of 2021, I traveled to Guatemala. While the US government spends millions of dollars on development aid, most Americans only see a migrant crisis at the border. This leads to a dehumanized and superficial understanding of the problem. We wanted to highlight one of the root causes of why so many in Central & South America were making the perilous journey. My team's reporting took us to a children's shelter financed by US sponsors, close to the city and tourist hotspot Antigua. Shortly after arriving, the state of the children stunned me, and I was confronted with a similar ethical dilemma as I had faced on the US-Mexico border. The children were so malnourished that it was hard to shamelessly point the camera at them. At the same time, failing to capture the full scope of their suffering would haunt me. Ultimately, I was extremely proud of how we humanely and persuasively portrayed a side of the migration problem that few see.
