It's been more than a year since a toxic mine spill, dubbed by some as the worst environmental disaster in Mexico's history, contaminated the Sonora River. Communities are now pushing back against the mine and the government to protect their families and the lands they call home.
Since a toxic mine spill in 2014 impacted nearly 25,000, Mexican authorities say the Sonora River is clean. The government has identified nearly 400 people with illnesses tied directly to heavy metal contamination. But as new cases continue to emerge, researchers and environmental experts warn that the problem could be much greater than the government admits.
Hooked: Tracking Heroin’s Hold on Arizona is a special investigative report produced by advanced journalism students at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication on the growing perils of heroin and opioid use. The project includes a 30-minute investigative broadcast report aired Jan. 13 by every TV station and most radio outlets across Arizona.
Dezarae, 21, and Paul, 25, became addicted to heroin when they were teenagers. They have been dating for about two years and have gone through repetitive stints of relapse and sobriety. At this point, they don't know which is stronger: their love for each other, or their love for heroin.
