Rodney Dekker is a photographer and filmmaker. He has extensively documented stories about climate change through short films, radio and photography in Australia, Bangladesh and the South Pacific. Most recently he produced a series of shot films about refugees and asylum seekers. His story 'Tides of Resilience' commissioned by ABC Radio National, was a finalist of the UN Media Peace Awards, for Best Online, 2012. His short films have been broadcast by SBS, The Guardian, ABC, Sydney Morning Herald, Australian Geographic and the Herald Sun. His photos have appeared in The Toronto Star, The Jakarta Post, The Washington Times, Asian Geographic, The Age, and the Sydney Morning Herald. Dekker’s been a finalist of Head On, Reportage, UN Media Peace Awards, Australia's Top Photographers, Moran Photographic Prize, International Photography Awards, Px3, received nominations for Prix Pictet and PDN’s 30 and was selected for the Eddie Adams Workshop USA.
Chol Yahmalek walked around parts of Africa between 1987 and 1991, escaping from civil war in South Sudan. This short film, Footprints, delves into the time he and around 26,000 'lost boys' walked about 1,600km looking for safety. Produced with The Story Collective.
When Peter was reporting on the civil war in Sri Lanka, the government threatened to kill him. After more than five years in detention in Australia, his dreams of a normal life seem as distant as ever. This video reveals the obstacles he has faced since fleeing his home country. Janet Galbraith coordinates a writing group for asylum seekers called Writing Through Fences. They write about their traumatic experiences and also their beautiful moments, shared on Facebook.
