About
Considering himself as an ‘urban nomad’, in his childhood, Ostin Fam moved houses 9 times within the city of Hanoi (Vietnam) before leaving to study films at Wesleyan University (CT, USA). At the age of 16, he shot a documentary about his single mom’s love stories and with another two following short films, presenting a short trilogy of 3 teenage characters’ outlook of the grown-ups. With an interest in different possibilities of combining documentary and fiction, his films focus on the concept of cultural flexibility - how people reconcile among their multiple identities in different regions and generations, as well as the notion of escapism in Vietnamese context. Ostin’s short films are more well traveled than himself, while at home, he has been wandering to the most hidden corners of the country to observe, collect and shine light on underserved narratives. He has collaborated with various international platforms such as CNA, Art Basel, Nowness Asia and UNESCO. Occasionally, he co-organizes film workshops (On The Reel Film Lab, Sonic Ground), teaches as well as runs to do other miscellaneous to make a living.

Meet the artists | Ngoc Nau
Ngoc Nau grapples with a culture in flux. Identity, memory, and heritage form the thematic core of the emerging Vietnamese artist’s installations and AR films. In this episode of ‘Meet the artists’, we visit Nau in her studio – a room in a former factory on Hanoi’s outskirts – and wander the surrounding industry-wasted landscape as she reflects on the ways technology has become an omnipresent force in our lives. During our visit, Nau also introduces us to the local folk tradition Đạo Mẫu, the worship of the Mother Goddess of the Three Realms. ‘Among those who worship the Mother Goddess are workers in the coal mining industry,’ she explains. ‘The ritual is a way for them to give back the fortune and financial gains extracted from nature.’
