About Karen

I run a niche production company, Amehlo Productions, in Durban, SA, from which myself and a small team produce/direct/shoot and edit video content for broadcast and online platforms. Documentary film work is our focus. A passion for powerful story-telling drives the work we produce. We take pride in the unexpected beauty found in the simplest or strangest of places. Empathy and humility result in the best interviews. Socio-political doccie work is our favourite content but we also regularly do more commercial work. My DOP of choice has the following gear (C200, FujiXT3, Drone, Gimbal, 2x Aputure 300Dii Rode NTG 3 rifle mic, Rode Go and Senheisser lapels) Together we make a great team, both adventurous and meticulous! Most recently we are proud to have produced the award-winning documentary Coding for Crayfish for Abalobi and also an insert for BBC World News on Forced Sterilisation of women in South African hospitals.

    BBC World Documentary Series - Amehlo Productions was commissioned by BBC World to handle the South African part of this story - filming over a few days in various locations around KZN. We provided a small team, Director, DOP and translator and worked long hours at short notice to film these women's haunting stories and then delivered the footage to London for the edit.
