A Special Court in Pathankot Monday awarded life imprisonment to three out of the six convicted for the rape and murder of an eight-year-old girl in Jammu’s Kathua district last year. After nearly a year-long trial, the court held the six guilty in the case that shook the conscience of people across India. The court acquitted another accused Vishal Jangotra, son of mastermind Sanji Ram, giving him the ”benefit of doubt”.

Bashir Ahmad’s 11 years of incarceration on false terrorism charges
Ahmad, a 33-year-old Kashmiri was arrested on 10 March 2010, when attending a training course for the management of post-cancer surgery camps in Ahmedabad. He was charged under the draconian Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and accused of “visiting the state to recruit young men and send them to Pakistan for terrorist training.” After 11 years of incarceration, on 19 June, a district court in Gujarat dismissed all charges against Ahmad. The court noted that the Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad was unable to provide any evidence to back their charge that Ahmad was involved in terrorism.
