I’m a documentary filmmaker, from Russia. My key-topics: social ethnography, ecology, current reality with the ability to see what is broken in it. My work as a documentary film director is like building a ship. First, the selection of materials and the shipyard: search for topics the society is concerned about, communication with the heroes, an operators’ team choice, and funding. Then producing a stage, the actual «ship building» begins: directing the filming process, sensitive interaction with barely familiar people (the film heroes) and capturing moments of reality through the camera - the frames of the «ship» skeleton. Often «documentary shipyard» is located in the Arctic, in the mountains of Dagestan or in the Siberia forest with reindeer herders. When creating a film, I’m responsible for everything. When necessary, I shoot by myself.
Deer don't eat oil bushes, but the oil workers it does not care. The new road to the drilling oil sites deprives the Khanty of traditional pastures. The ecosystem of the Russian North with forests, swamps, small peoples and simple values is disappearing the existence.
Vladimir Pomytkin manages the only one sorting station in Sakhalin, collects garbage from the island and hopes, that the government of the Sakhalin region will help him to find a sales market for the recycled products. This story very brightly illustrates the situation with garbage in the entire Far East of Russia, and with the garbage reform in Russia in general.
