AJ+ is a global news community for the connected generation. We highlight human struggles and achievements, empower impassioned voices, and challenge the status quo.  <br>  It's is Al Jazeera's mobile app and social stream dedicated for the connected generation.

Our VJ are used to leverage original short  and personal form of storytelling from the ground.

AJ+ VJ stories are not normal news.  A straight-forward look at who, what, when, where doesn’t work for us.  We are looking for stories that are made interesting by the unexpected angle, human side, or visually captivating.   Ask yourself does this story move me or does it just inform me? 
 
Here are some aspects of what makes an AJ+ story:
Unique side angle on a major story.  Also a story that connects two things not commonly associated with each other.
Pushback to conventional wisdom on how the mainstream media (including Al Jazeera) or governments frame an issue.  
Emotional or compassionate side of a story.  Show specifically how people are directly affected by the issue (Emotions go beyond sadness can be awe, humor, anger, love, inspiration, etc…).  
Direct from the ground.  Hear directly from people in the city/town/village where the bigger story is taking place.
 Incredible visual.  Is there something we need to see (and hear) to believe?  This is video, so let’s leverage those stories.  It doesn’t have to be “hard news.”


Commissioned videos will appear at least one of AJ+'s language channels (English, Spanish, Arabic) and potentially on our partner's channels too.

AJ+ short documentary on 'haenyeos' or women sea divers of South Korea. Following a group of elderly haenyeos, we learn about how the very survival of their existence hinges on their ability to maintain sustainability in their job as the ocean quickly changes due to the climate crisis.

Fixed interviewees in this short documentary series delving into the world of soccer in Korea

Conducted dozens of interviews with high-profile subjects involved in the investigation of a series of sex scandals that brought down some of Korea’s biggest K-pop stars in 2019. Secured veiled interviewees, determined shoot locations and navigated other logistical needs of the production. Contributed on-audio commentary for the podcast.

Co-edited and fact-checked the final script before published, researched and provided archival materials (audio and video) for post-production.

This BBC documentary series was created in both audio and video formats (a 1-hour TV documentary and a 6-episodes podcast series)

Lee Hyun Choi is a bilingual producer, writer, and translator.  She has produced radio, online, and TV reports and documentaries for the BBC, AJ+, the Voice of America (VOA), Super Channel Canada, The Nation, and more. Lee Hyun's work varies in form from breaking news coverage to long form feature / investigative documentaries. Her coverage of the mounting anti-feminist backlash in Korea, highlighting the cyber-bullying that South Korean archer An San faced during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, reached more than 18 million viewers.
