I am an award-winning Tagalog filmmaker and journalist. I was a Fulbright Scholar who holds a Master’s degree in documentary filmmaking from New York University where I was also a recipient of the NYU GSAS Scholarship. I obtained my Bachelor’s degree in Creative Writing from the University of the Philippines – Diliman. I directed, wrote and produced two films: Cuchera and Nuwebe, which have been screened in over 60 international film festivals including Toronto, Stockholm, Fribourg, Cleveland, Belgrade, Montreal, Vancouver, Geneva and Goteborg. Aside from my work in film, I also contribute to TV, print and online media. Last November, I produced a documentary for Get Real of Channel News Asia. I have also contributed articles and video work to The New York Times, GMA Network and Philippine Center for Investigative Journalism. I won as Best Director at the 2015 ASEAN International Film Festival and Awards and Grand Prize at the 2014 UNICEF Child Rights Awards.
Fourteen year-old Arr Sheraine lives in Bamboo Creek, an island in the Northern Philippines with the nation’s highest prevalence of adolescent pregnancy. Arr Sheraine is one of the 25 percent of female teens on the island who are pregnant or are already mothers. The Philippines is the only ASEAN nation where cases of adolescent pregnancies are increasing.
Rosalie Cabenan is forty-six years old and so far she has given birth 22 times. She lives in a community of informal settlers in Baseco, Manila. Seventeen of her children are alive,while five have died from various causes ranging from pregnancy complications to lack of decent post natal care, to drowning in a flash flood caused by a typhoon.
