Orphans of Fire | Brazil's rescued giant anteaters given a second chance at life
August 24, 2022 marks the one-year anniversary of a very special anteater named Tupã returning to the wild. Watch his incredible story here. Brazil’s Pantanal region is the world’s largest tropical wetland. It is home to thousands of species of wildlife, like the iconic giant eater. But in 2020, the Pantanal burned like never before in documented history. Climate change induced wildfires destroyed a quarter of the Pantanal, killing millions of animals. In the aftermath, IFAW supported the Tamandua Institute’s Orphans of Fire project, dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of orphaned giant anteaters like Tupã, who was only approximately a month old when found alone and rescued. After a year in rehabilitation, Tupã is the first known giant anteater to be released back into the wild after being rescued from such a young age.
