Elena Stancu is an independent journalist, based in Bucharest, contributor at the Romanian editions of Marie Claire, National Geographic, Esquire and other local magazines. She started working as a journalist 10 years ago and her worked focused on domestic violence, human trafficking, Romanian prisons and integration of minorities. She was a 2013/2014 Fellow at the Rosalynn Carter Fellowship for Mental Health Journalism and a 2013 Fellow at the Balkan Fellowship for Journalistic Excellence. In December 2013, she resigned as a Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Marie Claire Romania and moved in a camper in order to work on long-form journalism projects. A story at Tîrgșor Women Penitentiary, România, about Tomboys, women who, during prison detention, assume a male identity. They have “wives” who tidy up, do the laundry and wash the dishes. Tomboys protect them, fulfil their emotional need and offer them sexual pleasure. They have men nicknames, cut their hair short and wear masculine clothes, clench their fists and demand respect.
A story about a man who killed his girlfriend after 5 years of abusive relationship. Reported as part of a fellowship offered by Superscrieri/Avon grants on the subject of domestic violence, under aegis of Superscrieri Awards for nonfiction that changes the world.
