About Derek M.

Derek is a freelance video producer based out of Long Beach, CA. His creative journey began in the US Navy as the command photographer for USS Howard (DDG 83) a guided-missile destroyer. While onboard he engaged in documenting such activities as hunting submarines, foreign government training exercises, and volunteer work in underprivileged communities abroad. Beginning in 2017 he began his freelance career back stateside working with local wineries and small businesses in the bay area while completing his bachelor's degree in Radio, TV, and Film from San Jose State University. While in college he won awards for Best Cinematography and Scriptwriting for films he produced for college film festivals. His freelance career started to pick up speed in 2018 when he signed with Silicon Valley Clean Energy as their content creator, from 2020-2021 they completed a first of its kind, 5-hour training course on home electrification, serving as a tool to educate contractors and homeowners about living the all-electric lifestyle. Derek has been involved with productions with some of the top tech companies in the bay area including LinkedIn, Intuit, PayPal, and Apple. I was born and raised in Saigon, Vietnam and currently based in Anaheim and San Diego. I got into filmmaking because I am both intrigued by the creative writing process and I have a deep passion for photography/cinematography. When I combined these two elements together, I realized that I could make something meaningful with it, and I decided to pursue this field. Her work has led her to cover character driven stories such as the LGBT refugees in Europe, police brutalities for the ACLU, climate change in an indigenous Alaskan village, child marriage in Kenya, disability activism in the US, and women's health in professional sports. She is currently working on finishing her first feature documentary, Mary’s Way. Filmed over the course of five years, it is the portrait of one girl’s journey to help bring an end to female genital mutilation and child marriage in her Kenyan community. When Samantha is not working on a documentary, she can be found hiking mountains, biking, or playing soccer. Steven Gute is a filmmaker who has worn many hats in his now 20-year career. Gute works as a director, producer, writer, cinematographer, journalist and editor, and already has a long resume of credits stretching across a multitude of formats. While his origins lay in narrative films, he eventually worked on a number of documentary films, including: Leonardo Di Caprio's 11th Hour; followed by Radicalized, a portrait of millennial resistance during the Occupy movement; ongoing front-line documentation of protests at Standing Rock and Black Lives Matter; and ultimately, leading a team to the Arctic to film glaciers in decline for HBO’s Ice on Fire. He has worked as a journalist for institutions like The Young Turks and Red Canary Collective. His current series about water (Confluence) has taken him to 48 states thus far.
