Part of the Phillips 66 Employing our Energy Series, this video features Caroline Eliassen, Director of Federal Government Affairs, who describes her lifelong interest in politics and the details of her job. Commissioned by Havi Global Solutions, this documentary-style video shows the McDonald’s Brand from the Owner/Operator’s perspective to demonstrate effectiveness for the ROP Lock inventory automation system. This video was wildly successful — convincing hundreds of McDonald’s Owner/Operators to sign up for the ROP Lock Program. In these videos, scholars and historians explore the Key Concepts of the Teaching Hard History framework by discussing slavery’s impact on the lives of enslaved people in what is now the United States and the nation’s development around the institution. As an Egyptian-American, the latter part of my childhood was spent in Cairo, Egypt. During that time I became fluent in Arabic and learned the culture and values of the Egyptian people. It has been this integral experience in my life that continues to motivate my efforts to give the Arab world a voice and essentially was what encouraged me to put my college education on-hold in the U.S. and return to Egypt during the Arab Spring. I have always felt a deep connection to the Egyptian people, culture, and language. When I visited Egypt three years ago for a brief stay after a prolonged absence, I was distraught by the deteriorating standard of life an overwhelming majority of Egyptians, including much of my extended family. I was disgusted at the police state under which my friends and family lived in constant fear of thugs and secret police. My Egyptian family members had fewer rights in their own country then a foreigner. The government had purposely driven people into poverty and hopelessness. I came back to Egypt after the revolution because I felt compelled to be here, to witness what was happening, and to help in any way possible.
