Christopher Livesay is an award-winning multimedia journalist based in Rome, Italy. His recent work focuses on Pope Francis, immigration, and the threat ISIS poses to the West. He has reported from Mexico to Milan for PBS FRONTLINE, NPR, and the BBC/PRI, among other outlets, and has appeared as an analyst on the CBC, FOX News and Italian state broadcaster Rai. He holds a master’s degree (highest honors) from the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism in New York City. For three years Livesay was a staff reporter for the English and foreign desks at ANSA, the leading Italian news agency, where he was part of the team that broke the story of Benedict XVI’s shocking abdication. He recently completed a reporting fellowship sponsored by the Ford Foundation, and he is currently directing a documentary on the spectacular lengths to which some people will go in order to stop ISIS.

Syria's 5-year-long civil war has killed more than 400,000 people and displaced eleven million more, 5 million of whom have become refugees. But as people flee the humanitarian crisis to places like Europe and Turkey, tiny Lebanon holds the distinction of hosting the most refugees per capita of any country in the world. NewsHour Weekend Special Correspondent Christopher Livesay reports.
Starting tomorrow, the European Union plans to start sending back some of the 170,000 migrants and refugees who have made the dangerous journey by sea to Europe this year. Along another main migrant sea route from North Africa toward Italy, one small town has adopted a very friendly posture toward migrants and refugees.
