Dave Timko is an award-winning documentary filmmaker with over three decades of visual storytelling experience. In his combined roles as director, shooter and editor, Timko co-created over 40 documentaries for CNN, specializing in first-person narratives of the most relevant stories of our time. He has been recognized for his work with 5 National Emmy Awards, a Peabody and speciality awards for environmental and global health reporting. As an independent journalist since 2012, Timko has been lead producer/director for two public television series, “This American Land” and “Global Health Frontiers,” exploring front line battles to overcome climate change and deadly diseases around the globe. Camera in hand, Timko allows his story subjects to drive the narrative with energetic sequencing and memorable take-aways that take the viewer on a journey from challenge to resolution. Solution-based journalism is a Timko specialty.
This is an example of a short-form doc produced, shot and edited as a legacy project for a private individual. Good demos of my drone piloting here, use of music and creative approaches to historical imagery. This was shot over a 3 day period with free-form scripting happening in edit.
In 2022 I was hired by MBARI (the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute) to produce a video series helping to describe the institutes mission and better humanizes their scientists. This "one-man-band" project has been very well received on MBARI's website/social media, so much so that they've decided to expand the project to include profiles of additional groups and individuals. The power of first-person narratives on display.
For this limited series airing on Public Television nationwide in 2016, I was lucky to serve as DP, Lead Producer and Editor. First-person story telling is my sweet-spot as we get to hear from the concerned, passionate voices waging these battles in their natural environments. I shot this piece in urban and rural Delhi villages with my Executive Producer over the course of 4 days and produced/assembled the final product in around a week.
