Emily Harger is a documentary filmmaker, video producer, and photojournalist based in the San Francisco Bay Area. Her roots in Appalachian Pennsylvania drive her to explore the urban/rural divide in the US, as well as the transitions and resiliency of rural American communities. Her stories expose socioeconomic issues through a hopeful and cinematic lens.
In 2013, Robyn Allen received a 20-year sentence for trafficking in illegal drugs. She says she sold methamphetamine to support her family after a back injury left her without work. But the reasons Allen started using the drug run much deeper. Robyn's story is a cautionary tale of female incarceration in Oklahoma, where women are locked up at twice the national average.
Dr. Jennifer Schneider lost her 31-year-old daughter, Jessica Wing, to colon cancer in 2003. To this day, Schneider wonders whether there was a link between her daughter being a three-time egg donor and her diagnosis. In 2012, Kev Polk’s life was flipped upside down. He and his wife lost their foster children to a different placement, and soon after, they chose to end their marriage. In the wake of major transitions, Polk opted to create a new home for himself. Now he steps out of bed every morning into a space no larger than ninety-eight square feet, built on wheels and entirely off the grid.
