Don Downey is a documentary director/writer/shooter/editor with a portfolio of public issue and narrative films. Downey's creative ability blends story with visual. He has a background in broadcast news, documentaries, and web series. He is a former NBC television affiliate reporter. He is also a fiction writer. Downey’s films elicit powerful stories from widely varying subjects. He worked on an environmental film on the Hopi reservation, numerous climate change films, as well as documentaries on sustainable cities with the Rockefeller Foundation. He has a resume of human-interest and promotional films ranging from health care, to contemporary art profiles, to corporate image. His film, Time in the Barrel: Death & Life in Vietnam looks at the disturbing impacts of war, and won the Portland Film Festival. Downey’s strengths are skilled interviewing, an informal yet efficient production style, imaginative writing and sharp editing.
