About

EDU:    Columbia University: BA in Film Studies, Photography (2009, New York) NYU Tisch School of the Arts Asia: MFA in Film Directing, Cinematography (2013, S     ingapore)   LABS:   Berlinale Tokyo Talent Campus 2013, Beijing International Film Festival Jackie Chan Plan A Workshop 2016 (Best Group Pitch Award, Best Creativity Award), FIRST International Film Festival Financing Forum 2016, Toronto International Film Festival Filmmaker Lab 2020 (Hudson’s Bay Fellow), 2021 Hollywood Foreign Press Association Residency, Bridging the Dragon Sino-European Lab 2021 Being the only Chinese kid at my school in Canada, I was an easy target for bullying. Film helped me make sense of my own multiculturalism. At Columbia, an arts requirement led me to documenting the hallucinatory rants of a Chinese classmate-cum-drug dealer, driven to crime by parental pressure to get rich quick. Premiering at the USA Film Festival, the short allowed me to exorcize my own demons as an Asian-American. At NYU, I made the narrative short H’mong Sisters, where indigenous sisters from Vietnam struggle to earn a living serving Western tourists. Premiering at TIFF, it earned Directing and Cinematography accolades. I’ve spent the last few years in Beijing paying off my student loans working on commercials and music videos for brands like Huawei and artists like Jackie Chan. As I return to narrative filmmaking, I hope to make emotionally resonant movies that also engage on a civic level.
