About
Shaojun is a China-based documentary filmmaker who has been focusing on social issues for over five years. In 2019, she started directing and editing her first feature documentary "River", which took over four years to produce and has more than 1,100 hours of footage. Shaojun has also collaborated with international media outlets such as Vice. Before making feature documentaries, Shaojun produced and directed many short feature documentaries at Arrow Factory, one of the most prestigious short video production houses in China. Her notable works include "From Gangster to Embalmer", "Why DINK", and "China's Viral ‘Skinny Enough’ Challenges Are Making People Sick", each with about ten million views across all platforms. "From Gangster to Embalmer" and "Why DINK" also trended on Weibo (Chinese Twitter) when they were released. Shaojun received a full scholarship to the Erasmus Mundus DocNomads program.

The pressure to be thin is threatening the lives of some women in China. Being thin has always been a cultural beauty standard for women in the country, but now it has become amplified across social media. As a new generation of internet users become exposed to the latest viral “skinny enough” challenges, such as the A4 waist challenge or collarbone coin challenge, more cases of eating disorders are being reported throughout the country. We speak to three Chinese women who have come of age in this environment and feel that perhaps there are different beauty standards in the West and in China.
