I'm a Nairobi based photographer and filmmaker covering East Africa and South Asia. I have worked for a variety of international media including Al Jazeera, AJ+, VICE, CNN, The Guardian, CCTV, Voice of America, Radio France International, The Daily Telegraph, and The Sunday Times. I've reported from Somalia, Chad, Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi, Mozambique, Iraqi Kurdistan and India. I have produced, shot and edited a number of documentaries including several 30 minute films for CCTV Africa. In 2013 I served as producer/director on a multi-camera shoot for a TV series in Mogadishu, Somalia. I am sensitive to stories that provide invaluable context for understanding breaking news, and these are the stories I aim to tell. I like finding characters whose lives say bigger things about the place and times they live in.

After decades of civil war, an estimated one-third of Somalia’s population suffers from mental-health problems. With only three months of training, Dr. Abdulrahman Ali Awale works in a bare-bones clinic to overhaul the country’s treatment and perception of mental illness.
In 2011, an international peacekeeping force pushed al Shabaab Islamists from Somalia's capital city. The fight continues in the countryside and in Mogadishu. The weakened extremists launch periodic suicide bombs and IED attacks. For a generation, the lives of young Somalis have been obscured by the violence. Today, the fragile peace in Mogadishu allows youth to imagine a future beyond war.

Last week a woman wearing a miniskirt in downtown Nairobi was stripped and beaten by bus conductors for being "indecently dressed."
