Joseph Mwihia was born and raised in Kenya; trained as a cameraman, editor and lighting personnel in 2005-2006, and started working as a freelance cameraman, primarily with the Associated Press, in 2007. Since then he has covered breaking news in Kenya and around Africa, including post-election violence and terror attacks on Westgate Mall and Garissa University in Kenya, Nelson Mandela’s final days in South Africa, unrest and elections in Nigeria, humanitarian crises in South Sudan and Somalia. He has produced, filmed, edited, written sports, entertainment features and stories covering social and environmental issues. His print stories have been published on the AP news wire and in newspapers around the world. He also freelances for organizations like UNICEF, USAID, UNEA, FAO, UNDP, WFP and IFAW, travelling widely across Africa to tell humanitarian and conservation stories.
