About Deborah

I am an Emmy winning video journalist and editor. I love to see what's on the other side of the wall. To hear words that shatter all preconceptions. To find connection where all hope seems lost. I am gritty and I do whatever it takes to "get the shot." I am humbled to be allowed into people's journeys of pain and courage, their intimate spaces, and their attempts to survive or build a better existence. This profession gives me a chance to share these experiences with the world, in an effort for us all to understand one another just a little bit more. I specialize in telling stories of social justice issues, people marginalized or misunderstood and the unknown. I have a talent for finding unusual angles and perspectives often overlooked. I am also very adventurous and I love stories that are difficult to get, climbing 100 feet into a tree or trekking through the wilderness. I thrive off getting dirty and risk-taking. I've created news pieces, profile pieces, long-form, human-centered, inspirational stories as well as promotional films and marketing videos.

Deb approached my story and subjects with incredible sensitivity and respect. She was detail oriented with our shot list and communicative about her approach. Highly recommend for any shoots in the Bay Area, Deb is great to work with from start to finish!

Deb is one of the best video journalists I have ever worked with. It is an honor to work with her each time. Her storytelling style is very intimate, raw, and empathy-driven. Looking forward to working with her again very soon.

Deborah is fantastic! She was extremely quick to respond to requests and questions on my project, and did a couple more revisions than we initially planned. I would gladly work with her again!

For most women, losing their hair is terrifying. It challenges their very sense of what it is to be a woman. They are expected to hide under wigs. 40 percent of people with hair loss in the U.S. are women. This group of courageous women have come out & live life openly bald, dealing with the stares, comments and insults. They find strength and empowerment with one another.

In March people fly from around the world. Tim Kovar leads them up to the crown of a redwood. The only place in the world where you can legally climb an old-growth redwood tree. More people have been to the top of Everest than to the top of a redwood. Trees give “deeper roots, pun intended." Kovar still needs solo “tree-time” once a month, “it’s my church." "Not a thing to do but a place to be."

“Over the moon excited, terrified, scared, emotional.” That’s how Jetta’Mae Carlisle described feeling as her sexual re-assignment surgery got closer. She was assigned male at birth, but felt like she was female since she was a child. Jamie Nelson was already taking testosterone when I met him and preparing for top surgery. I accompanied Carlisle and Nelson for over a year as they transitioned.
