I'm a public radio producer, journalist and documentary filmmaker. I was most recently a multimedia and community engagement producer for WBEZ, Chicago’s NPR affiliate station. I'm a former Kartemquin Diverse Voices in Docs Fellow and spent this past year producing "Uprooted" and "Reckoning," two interactive web curriculums about Japanese American resettlement to Chicago and the fight for redress and reparations in the 1980s.

Ecuador is the number one exporter of bananas in the world, but many consumers do not realize that this nutritious breakfast fruit happens to be the symbol of twentieth century U.S. involvement in Latin America, the region’s capitalist transformation and intense popular struggle.
In this web documentary, follow the story of a group of small farmers in Ecuador striving to change the banana industry as we know it. Through a model of business called Fair Trade, these farmers are building an alternative supply chain, one that prioritizes their health, their families and their community.
Ilse Cruz was brought into the United States by her mother when she was 4 years old, and has no memories of her native Mexico. She also doesn’t feel truly American — because she’s undocumented. “American culture and Mexican culture, they're both a part of who I am but I can't understand either one fully,” she says. As a high school senior, the discouraging realities of Cruz’s legal status have begun to set in: She’s wary of ever leaving the country to visit Mexico, she’s not sure if she can go to college, or apply for federal aid to make it possible. In this short documentary, Ilse, we follow along as Cruz navigates the process of attempting to be in the United States legally.
