In 1988 Gilles Frenken graduated at the National Film Academy in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, as a cameraman (D.o.P.), documentary film director and film editor. In the past 30 years he made, as a director with his camera on his shoulder or tripod, about 150 tv documentaries and films. Some of these films were broadcasted in more than 50 countries. As a cameraman Gilles Frenken worked for various film directors, and made more than 100 documentary films in more than 100 different countries. Some of these films won first prizes on various film festivals. As a director and D.o.P., he also made a movie, 'Little Treasures of Lombok'. This film about streetchildren in Indonesia, filmed without a budget, has been seen by more than 4.7 million people on YouTube. In the last 5 years he made more than 15 documentary films about art and artists. Gilles Frenken is both based in Amsterdam and Oosterbeek (near Arnhem).
In this 13-part TV series 2 teams of 2 cyclists traveled from Alaska to Ushuaia, in the south of Argentina, following the Pan-Americana trail. These teams were filming their adventures on the road, recording the amazing environment, scenery and interviewing local people on their way about their life and specially about their expectations about climate change.
The two main actors are street children. They play the story of their lives. Ten years old Sugeng was abandoned by his parents and lived on a garbage belt. Now he works and lives on a beach. At the age of 8 years Man ran away from home, where he was beaten up several times. For about two years he lives and works on a small market. The kids meet each other and decide to help each other to survive.
Six films about a small village in the east of the Netherlands, Vragender. In this part of the Netherlands, 'de Achterhoek', many young people leave the cities and villages. Many houses stay empty. Two artists try to help the community of Vragender to attrack new people. In 2016 Gilles Frenken followed the artists and made 5 short documentary films about them and finaly 1 longer film.
Expedition Oman is an epic tale about the search of a Dutch shipwreck that sunk near Oman in 1763. Thirty crew members had to walk for months through the hot and almost empty desert, but survived. One of the castaways kept a diary. 250 years later, the famous Dutch writer Abdelkader Benali and filmmaker Gilles Frenken went to Oman on a search for the shipwreck and for traces of the survivors.
