About Inara C.

I am a Japanese-Brazilian documentary filmmaker based in the Netherlands who has been telling nonfiction stories for 12 years. I promote empathy and raise awareness of human rights and environmental issues through stories in which people are protagonists of their own narratives. I am currently working on the feature-length documentary "Where is Nihon?", which was selected by Logan Nonfiction Program and was also a finalist at the Sundance Documentary Fund 2021 and the Berlinale Talents Doc Station 2022. My works include “Yzalú - Rap, Feminism and Blackness”, a CineB Solar winner and finalist at Semana Paulistana do Curta-Metragem (a City Hall of São Paulo’s competition); “Raam”, which won the CineSud’s SHIFT Film Festival Audience Award; and “Volta na Quadra,” winner of the NETLABTV Audience Award and sponsored by Folha de S. Paulo. Through my production company, I created short documentaries, series, video reports and campaign videos for companies and organisations such as Greenpeace, Avaaz, Google, C&A Foundation, Folha de S. Paulo, GOL, Marie Claire, Revista AzMina, Equal Times, Storyhunter, among others. I also produced, filmed and directed the Brazilian stories for the Riot Games’ international documentary series “Legends Rising”, during two seasons. I started my career as a video journalist at Folha de S. Paulo, the largest Brazilian newspaper, and at the publishing companies Globo and Abril — being one of the talents of the training program “Abril Journalism Course”. I received my degree in Social Communication and Journalism from the State University of Londrina in Brazil, studied documentary filmmaking at UnionDocs in New York, and have a specialized degree in cinema and video from Anhembi Morumbi University in Sao Paulo. Moreover I also did other courses focused on impact documentary, cinematography, editing, script writing and entrepreneurship.

I am a videographer and photographer with a background in journalism. I am widely traveled and specialize in the production of short documentaries, particularly in the developing world. I have done stories for the Red Cross / Red Crescent, United Nations and Fairfood International. I'm based in Amsterdam and I have a full range of Nikon DSLR cameras and lenses, audio recording equipment and video editing facilities. I also have a 60m2 studio in Amsterdam. I usually tell stories about people in difficult circumstances, how they cope, their plans for the future. I can provide additional photographic or written material if necessary. I have a well-developed visual sense and a nose for a good story.

I love the diversity of people and I'm genuinely interested in their stories. I have travelled extensively for work and have visited around 50 countries all over the world; both as a DP and as a director. Also I enjoy working for foreign companies in the Netherlands. Besides my work as a Director / DP I occasionally manage and produce more complex shoots. In the last years I have produced some shoots withfor example the magic bullet rig as well as a lot of greenscreen shoots, TV programming and TV commercials. I have a great network of good crew and know how to make a team out of them.

After completion of my studies I began working as a freelance sound technician and eventually was able to take on lighting technician projects. Then my interest in moving images took me to The International Film School, San Antonio de los Baños, Cuba were studied Digital postproduction for film, after which I began to take on more camera operator and video editing work. My video editing work eventually led to me working as video editor on a permanent basis for an international media agency. From my initial position as editor I moved up to chief editor, responsible for mentoring and overseeing work of editing departments in Amsterdam, Kenya and Ghana, and eventually attaining the position of Executive Producer.
