SHEMEI AGABO is a creative and innovative multimedia storyteller. Over the course of 7 years as a content creator, he has honed his skills in documentary film, audio production, and digital journalism, working with production companies and non-governmental organizations. His impactful documentaries are known for their novel and creative approach to storytelling. Shemei is currently pursuing a Master's in Digital Journalism at Aga Khan University in Nairobi, Kenya, and is well-equipped to navigate the ever-evolving landscape of media and communication. In addition to his academic and professional pursuits, Shemei is also the creative producer and editor of "AfriMillennial: The Podcast," a platform that highlights the stories of Uganda's creative contemporaries. He is also a volunteer with the ACTS Foundation, a network of professionals working to positively impact the spiritual, mental, and physical growth of youth in rural and urban centers of Uganda. Thomas Lewton is a British video journalist, photographer and documentary filmmaker currently based in East Africa. His films have featured on BBC Travel, the Thomson Reuters Foundation and VICE. He also produces content for NGOs and has worked with Friends of the Earth and Amnesty International. Before freelancing, Thomas worked as an Assistant Producer in broadcast TV for four years on factual documentaries for Channel 4, the BBC and Discovery Networks. Thomas produces under Fuzzy Head Films with multimedia journalist Alice McCool. Their documentary short - Malawi Gold - premiered in February 2017 at the Bertha DocHouse Cinema, and was nominated for Best Short Documentary at London Independent Film Festival. I was born in Uganda, and all my life can be traced to the country. In 2009, I discovered a budding relationship between Photography and me while undertaking a Procurement Bachelor’s degree at University. What began as a passionate hobby took up most of my time at University. Through that period, I applied myself to the teachings and learnings of different photographers through their works and from all sorts of online platforms. Solomon Serwanjja is the Executive Director of the African Institute for Investigative Journalism, (AIIJ) a home of investigative journalism. The organisation focuses on growing investigative journalism through training and capacity building, collaborative investigative reporting, grant making and research. Recently AIIJ won the digital human rights lab competition with their new innovation called the IROOM, a platform, though a prototype stage will profile issues around human rights abuses and efforts to bring perpetrators to account. Mr. Serwanjja is also an award winning investigative journalist currently working at NBS TV in Uganda. He is the lead anchor for the prime news bulletin NBS LIVEAT9. He is also the deputy head of the investigations desk. Mr. Serwanjja is the 2019 BBC World News Komla Dumor Award winner, a prestigious award that celebrates journalists that have excelled in Africa. His professional work has been appreciated by several journalism institutions like the African Centre for Media Excellence (ACME) which recognized him as the Journalist of the year 2017 award for his investigative work. I am an award-winning Kenyan filmmaker based in Kampala, Uganda. 12 years ago, I started my career as a TV producer at a local television station. After experimenting with a variety of genres in my 5-year tenure, I began to develop a fondness for documentaries. After my stint on television, I started working as a freelance producer where I collaborated with other filmmakers as a cinematographer and video editor. Working as a freelancer presented a sense of creative freedom. The red-tapes associated with television studios were eliminated. I had a chance to “do what I wanted”. This freedom allowed me to experiment more as I perfected my craft and delved further into the technicalities of production with the aid of online resources and other filmmakers in the trade. 7 years ago, I co-founded a start-up video production house in Kampala known as Framez and Wavez. My vision is to work with other Ugandan and African filmmakers in creating and curating multimedia content that will help shape Uganda and the East Africa region by telling inspiring stories that steer clear of the “dark-continent” narrative that has become commonplace whenever Africa is under the spotlight.
