Martin Trabalik is a Czech documentarist based in Prague. In his work, he focuses on social and humanitarian issues. In January 2016 he volunteered during the European refugee crisis in Greece becoming interested in photography in the process. Since then he has worked on several projects in Nagorno-Karabakh, Donbash, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and other areas. In the year 2018, he was awarded UNGRC and Czech Press Photo prize in the category Problems of our age for covering the Rohingya's expulsion from Myanmar. In 2021 he directed and produced documentary movie Incendios about forest fires in Bolivia which was awarded Best Documentary Feature at the International Film Festival in La Paz. I am a passionate journalist with an extensive background in broadcasting and experience in project management gained in youth and cultural cooperation. In various journalistic roles (Correspondent and Executive Producer at Hayat TV Sarajevo, Correspondent and Program Editor at N1 Sarajevo, and Planning Producer at TRT World Istanbul), I covered significant political, economic, and social issues in the Balkans, most recently for an international broadcaster. Fifteen years in the TV business not only enabled me to master storytelling and communication skills but also equipped me with a keen understanding of video production and television in general. I'm a freelance producer and editor. I grew up in Slovakia where I studied Journalism, and later moved to New York City to study Film Production and Screenwriting at The New School. While in school, I wrote and produced a number of short films and won the Rena Down Award for my feature script Crushing. I have worked in many different ares of production. Until recently, I was an Associate Producer for Magnet Media Films where I had a opportunity to create videos for brands such as Adobe, Cisco, Google, Chase , Spike TV etc. In 2017, I produced and co-edited a virtual reality short film about human trafficking called In the Shadows which premiered in January at VR Fest 2018 in Las Vegas. I love the challenge of bringing an idea or concept to life, considering not only the creative possibilities of a script but also the logistical realities and crafting a harmony between the two in order to achieve an optimal outcome that all those involved can be proud of.

I am an award winning news/documentary correspondent, producer, writer, cameraman and editor with experience of 16 years. I can work with and lead teams or operate alone as a one man band. I was born in Czechoslovakia. My first media job was a producer of musical programs for Czechoslovak Television. In 1991, I moved to the USA where I studied Newsgathering for Television at University of Colorado. Joined CNN in April 1999 as an International Desk Assignment Editor in Atlanta and later became a Field Producer. I was based in Berlin in 2005 and 2006. During my assignments in Afghanistan and Iraq, I learned how to shoot and edit. I occasionally report on CNN air and write for CNN.com. Besides wars, conflicts and natural disasters, I covered major political, economic or sport events in more then 60 countries. Since 2007, I was based in China covering Asia as a CNN producer and a correspondent for the Czech Television. I now live with my family in Hong Kong. I won an Emmy Award in 2008.
