With over a decade of experience telling impactful stories about the African American experience, John is dedicated to creating films that educate and enlighten audiences. Originally from Charleston, Travis was inspired at a young age by the storytelling traditions of his community. After studying filmmaking in college, he launched his career making poignant documentaries and narratives grounded in the history and culture of the South. Travis's films confront racial injustice while also celebrating the richness of African American life, music, and spirituality. For over a decade I worked as a freelance cinematographer and producer for National Geographic, Discovery Channel, BBC and The History Channel. In that time, I climbed the ladder from production assistant, to coordinator, to associate producer, to assistant camera, and finally to producer and cinematographer. Having fulfilled all these titles, I am a well-rounded filmmaker. I am one of the first and only filmmakers to capture the elusive Abyssinian lion on camera. Most recently, my short documentary about transboundary mining threatening the integrity of the waters between British Columbia and Southeast Alaska, "Voices of the Inside Passage", was selected to the Colorado Environmental Film Festival.
