Jackson House Films is a duo of award-winning documentary filmmakers based in Colorado with a particular interest in documentary film, video journalism, vérité cinematography, and doc-style editing. I create handcrafted documentary films full of heart and empathy. Films that inspire and resonate long after viewing. Stories of heroes and victims, science and progress, climate and environment. With more than 20 years as a photojournalist and filmmaker, my passion for storytelling has taken me from the burning ghats of Varanasi, India, to a smuggler's tunnel in Nogales, Mexico. Capturing the complexities of the human spirit and creating images that move others to act is the greatest gift of my profession. During my newspaper career, I was twice named Scripps Howard photographer of the year and earned dozens of national and international awards. I work for newspapers, including The Washington Post and NY Times, magazines and media outlets, as well as commercial and nonprofit clients. I also teach video storytelling and serve as a board member of the Atlanta Photojournalism Seminar. I have made two very successful feature length documentaries – one about a homeless man running from his demons and finding grace in unlikely places, and another about finding solutions to racial inequality following the death of George Floyd. Scott Colby is a South Dakota native and Denver-based photographer who has been capturing stories on camera for fifteen years. He specializes in commercial, adventure, travel, and portrait photography, and has a passion for collaborating with clients to tell the stories they want to share with the world. Since his early days as a BMX rider and photographer, Scott has captured meaningful, human moments everywhere from Colombia to Iceland to Vietnam. In 2018, he underwent a three-month motorcycle journey across southeast Asia to document the travels of the Triple Tree Motorcycle Club. The shifting cultural landscapes that Scott encounters throughout his travels provide endless fascination and comfort in the understanding that people across the world all essentially want the same things. In 2018, Scott began the Portrait Project, a storytelling initiative that captures intimate moments in casual conversation. The endless opportunities and challenges that lighting provides is one of Scott’s favorite aspects of visual storytelling, and this relationship is showcased in the Portrait Project and throughout his landscape and travel photographs. Alex is an American cinematographer and field producer focused on documentary and adventure filmmaking. He excels in unpredictable settings, and has produced work during civil unrest, inside hurricanes, operating rooms, prisons, wildlife blinds, and remote alpine environments. He is a proficient outdoorsman and has skied first descents in Svalbard, scuba dived fjords in Iceland, mountain biked Western China, and climbed 35 of Colorado's 14,000' peaks. Equal parts journalist and technician, Alex is as comfortable conducting interviews as he is lighting them. Andrew Bateman is a documentary filmmaker who is interested in film's potential as a tool for social change. Andrew has been awarded a 2015 California Humanities Research and Development Grant, 2013 BAVC Media Maker Fellowship, and the SOMArts 2013 N3 Media Fellowship. Currently he is producing a feature length documentary about remittance homes in Latin America, and in pre-production for a documentary about migrant labor housing in California. Andrew is a freelance video journalist for Denver Westword and holds a Master of Fine Arts in Film and Media Arts from Temple University and a Master of Arts degree in American Studies from the University of New Mexico.
